How to get back your lost password in Ubuntu

Ubuntu is far more flexible and reliable than other OS around but imagine if you just forget your password and con't login in you account, isn't it an horrible idea? there are ton of things that may lead you to forget your password. But here is a method that could help you through your trouble. 
to recover your lost Ubuntu password you just need to follow these simple steps. 

  • Restart your system and enter into boot menu. If you are using only Ubuntu in your system, then during the boot just hold and press shift key, this will guide you to the boot menu. Or in case you are multi boot user i.e. you use any other OS with Ubuntu, then boot menu will simple appear.
  • From the boot options, select recovery mode.
  • Once you select the recovery mode, you will need to wait until the boot finishes. Once the process is completed just select Drop to root shell prompt from the list to reset your password.
  • Once you are in just type : ls /home (l is the lowercase of L)
  • This will show you the list of user account, now type : passwd username
  • Here you will need to replace the  username by the username you want to reset.
  • You will now be asked for a new password, and press enter now you will be asked to retype and retype your password.
  • Now type exit to come back to the main menu. You are done with your password.
Now, you can login with the new password you have just created.
